G.I. Joe: Renegades News and Intel from Toy Fair 2011

I figure most of the folks here are following the news reports on GeneralsJoes.com itself, so I didn’t need to post too many up-to-the-minute reports here.  However, I did want to make sure that any Renegades info gets here as it should.

The biggest news of the show was by far the debut of the G.I. Joe: Renegades action figures!  While we only saw the first four: Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, and Firefly, we were treated to some excellent looking product.  They manage to bridge the gap between realistic and animated  to perfect, really capturing the spirit of G.I. Joe: Renegades without totally casting aside the Joe fans who prefer a more realistic style.  Firefly especially is a fantastic update.

The gallery below is a sampling of all of the Renegades product that was shown on the showroom as well as press photos.

Also at the show, we got a chance to hear Mike Vogel and Jeff Kline talk a little bit about the production process, and how they really wanted to start at the beginning, crafting a universe that no one had really seen before.  The desired end result is the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra universe that we all know and love, but they wanted to show how it got that way.  They specifically mentioned a “three year plan” where they wanted to spend 3 years building the universe until we got to a point where it was something that really rang true and seemed familiar to Joe fans everywhere.

They once again specified that we would see Snow Job and Shipwreck in upcoming episodes.

After this, we got a look at an exclusive clip for the upcoming episode “Brothers of Light”, featuring Tomax and Xamot!  The following is a description of the clip:

“Tomax and Xamot appeared started off the clip. They had long hair, Xamot already had his scar, and they had very cool European accents.

They are speaking with a gathered group of apparent cult members, one of which is Dr. Mindbender. There would seem to be some brainwashing going on.

The twins introduce the new “Crimson Guard”, which appear to be Duke, Scarlett, and Roadblock in red dress uniforms, with high collars. Somewhat similar to the Cobra Trooper look from the Homecoming episodes, but in red.

They’re carrying “laser staffs” of some sort.

Snake Eyes and Tunnel Rat appear, not victims of the brainwashing. They sweep in, and the Twins order the Crimson Guard to attack. Tunnel Rat and Snake Eyes take all three of them out and continue after the Twins. They scale a large statue and bring it crashing down, smashing it, and apparently destroying “The Light” which has an element of the brainwashing in the episode.

The Twins say that the “Light” in the statue is only a part of their control over the cult members, and they order them to attack Snake Eyes and Tunnel Rat.

As the cult members close in on the Joes, the clip ends.

I really liked it. I’ll tell you, the high def animation looked AWESOME on the big screen. Seems as if the Twins and Crimson Guard are not yet part of Cobra, but have the same concept. The Twins talked about the Guard being a submersive force within the world, waiting to take over.”

That pretty much covered it.  It would seem clear that Renegades is going to be a focus going forward from the toy world, and I couldn’t be happier.  The toys came out gorgeous, and the cartoon continues to do awesome things.

As always, keep your eyes peeled to GeneralsJoes.com for all the Toy Fair news and intel!
